Immersive theatre is theatre where you’re not a spectator. There’s no stage. No seats in rows. No fourth wall between you and the performers. You’re inside the world of the story — moving through it, making choices, and shaping what happens next.
It’s a form of live performance that’s grown significantly over the past two decades, from small experimental productions to large-scale events. But at its core, immersive theatre has always been about one thing: dissolving the distance between story and audience.
Traditional theatre vs immersive theatre
TRADITIONAL
You sit in a designated seat and watch events unfold on a stage at a fixed distance. The performers don't speak to you directly. You observe.
IMMERSIVE
You're part of the space. Performers move among you. Scenes might happen simultaneously in different parts of the venue. You might be spoken to directly, or handed a prop that becomes part of the story.
Traditional theatre: you watch the story. Immersive theatre: you’re in it.
Five ways it happens
Site-specific theatre
Performances created for a specific, non-theatrical space — a bar, a cellar, a private home, a warehouse. The venue is part of the story.
Promenade theatre
Audiences follow performers or move through multiple spaces as the story unfolds. You might follow one character or choose your own path.
One-on-one performance
An experience designed for a single audience member and one performer. Rare, intense, and deeply personal.
Interactive narrative
The audience's choices directly affect the outcome of responses or what happens in the story. You're not observing what happens — you're deciding.
Immersive Events
You eat/drink as the performance unfolds around you, often with characters joining your table.
Why immersive theatre affects us more deeply
Psychologist Dr. Thomas Gilovich’s research on experiential memory shows that experiences become part of our identity in a way that objects don’t. We are the sum of what we’ve lived through, not what we’ve owned. Immersive theatre amplifies this. Because you’re present and participating, not passively watching, the emotional encoding is stronger. Something happened to you, not in front of you.
Immersive theatre in Madrid
Madrid’s cultural scene is rich and varied, but English-language immersive theatre has historically been almost absent from the city. Micro Immersive was founded to fill that gap; story-driven encounters that use the city’s unusual spaces and atmosphere as the backdrop. We work across two modes: interactive encounters, where a small cast responds directly to you, and world-building productions, where a designed environment exists as a world you move through.
What to expect at a Micro Immersive show
Our shows range from intimate productions for small groups in bars, cellars, and private spaces, to large-format events for up to 200 people. You’ll receive a location and time; sometimes the specific address is confirmed closer to the date as part of the experience.
There’s no dress code, no script to learn, and nothing to prepare. Arrive, follow what unfolds, and let the story find you. The only thing we ask is that you stay present.
Every performance is slightly different. We keep groups small so that the interaction is genuine; performers can read the room, respond to who’s there, and make choices that feel specific to that night.
